About

The story and the team behind Red Alert 2: Glory of the Republic in the browser.

Background

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 was developed by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000, the second game in the Red Alert series. It is an alternate-history Cold War, and you command either the Soviets or the Allies.

The game still has a devoted following, but the original build is increasingly awkward on modern systems. Installing and configuring it is also a real hurdle for new players.

Glory of the Republic is a browser project that rebuilds that classic with modern web technology. Open a browser and play — no installer. The aim is to keep what made the original great, and to make it easier to reach.

Technology

WebGL rendering

WebGL draws the battlefield, including dense scenes and effects, without giving up a smooth frame rate.

Responsive layout

The same front end adapts from a desktop monitor to a tablet or a phone.

WebSocket multiplayer

WebSockets keep multiplayer commands moving with low latency, so orders arrive while they still matter.

Offline play

A PWA path supports solo play even when the network drops.
